Inspiration

What inspires you? Who inspires you? Or do you tend to be the one who inspires others?
I am blessed to have such crazy talented, driven friends. I'm also blessed with wonderfully inspiring women in my family. I draw strength and inspiration from the women in my life. They are strong and they are beautiful. Here's just a glimpse of what I"m talking about....

It's the same women who encourage me along my life's journeys. I know, without a doubt, they love me and want to see me do well in life. They have been especially encouraging to me on my weight loss journey. I've been working hard since the beginning of May to be a healthier, happier person. I've taken up running and joined Weight Watchers. The combination of the fitness, "dieting" and encouragement have helped me continue to reach new goals. Not only have my closest friends encouraged me, but countless other friends on Facebook have as well. It means so much to me that they take time out to send me an encouraging comment or congratulate me when I lose another pound or run an extra minute.
Yesterday was my 13th weigh in at WW. I'm happy with how well the program works, especially when I work the program!  I am less than 10 pounds away from my Weight Watcher's goal weight. I can't wait to call myself a "Lifetime Member" and stop having to pay out monthly! Ha!

I also find a lot of inspiration from Pinterest. I love seeing the pictures with the inspirational quotes. I also love finding healthy recipes and reading personal stories of people reaching their goals. Yes, those inspire me. If you're so inclined, you can follow my boards here

I will even go out on a limb and say, I sometimes inspire myself. What?!? Yes. You see, I have never NEVER been a runner. Matter of fact, I have never wanted to run. But, out of nowhere one morning, I decided to download an Ease into 5k app and start running. Every time I run one minute longer than the last time, I amaze myself. It drives me to do more. So I guess, in a way, it's inspiration.

I've been told that sharing my journey on Facebook has been encouraging to others. That makes me feel good and feel like it's more than just about me. I'd like to encourage you to put yourself out there and be real with people about your struggles and goals. I've found Facebook (my friends that live in Facebook) to be one of the best accountability partners I've ever had. I can't thank them enough, but I can take the time to encourage them.

Addicted

Hello.
My name is Mrs. Montgomery & I'm addicted to Diet Coke.

I have cut my 45 - 64 oz. a day habit to
12 oz per day over the past two weeks.
Yes I said 45 - 64 oz.
Think about it.
In the morning you stop at your favorite drive-in & purchase a $1 large drink.
That is 32 oz in one sitting.
In the afternoon you stop at your other favorite happy hour drive in for
your 1/2 priced large drink.
That is another 32 oz in one sitting.
Who knew "happy hour" would mean 32 oz of ice cold diet coke.

I was happy in my addiction.
I really didn't see any heath issues.
Until the past two months.
Don't get me wrong.
I have read all the articles.
Watched all the social media videos.
Listened to Dr. Oz & my chiropractor tell me it's toxic.
I realize my body has been paying the price all along.
I just didn't "feel" it until recently.

I'm not a druggy.
I don't even do pharmaceuticals.
If I have a headache I try not to pop an aspirin.
But trust the doctors when they tell you quitting
Diet Coke is like quitting heroin.
"Another distinguishing feature of substance dependence -- whether it's to caffeine, nicotine, or hard drugs like heroin -- is the painful withdrawal symptoms that occur if a person tries to quit cold turkey. Although it's difficult to pinpoint whether aspartame, caffeine, or some combination of ingredients is responsible, people who cut back on diet soda report symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and irritability -- a feeling that Diet Coke addicts know well." - CNN Health Report

Kids listen to me when I say don't do Diet Coke.
Don't try it, not even once.
It's not worth it.
Diet Coke is the Housewives Crack.
I'm working on kicking my habit all together.

Are you addicted to Diet Coke?
Have you tried to quit?
Share your story.
They say that's part of the 12 step recovery.

What's Up, Doc?

Middle age has taken a toll on the Real Housewives of Oklahoma.

In the middle of our group texting frenzy the other night, we realized that we might belong on an episode of House.

I asked the RHOK stars to compile a list of recent ailments so you can commiserate or just point and laugh.
Here's the short list -
  • Ear infections
  • Arthritis
  • Migraines
  • Tender udders
  • Struggles with weight loss
  • Peri-Menopause
  • Knees (including surgeries)
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Food Allergies (new ones)
  • Hypermobile joints (ligaments too loose)
  • Fluttery heart (that's medical terminology)
  • High blood pressure
  • 10 gallons of blood drained for blood tests (this is just a guess)
  • Panic attacks
  • Vision problems (associated with headache)
  • Ulcers
  • IBS (it's a gastric thing)
  • DUB (it's a female thing)
  • Anemia
A few girls listed certain individuals in their life as an ailment, but I will refrain from including them in the list.  No reason to cause paranoia among friends.
One housewife is sure she is dying.
We're glad she is not and she has the CAT scan to prove it.
She's not allowed to Google her ailments.

As we fully embrace these middle ages, we now understand why we used to think 40 was so old.  This is the time when your body catches up with the years of abuse you didn't know you were giving it.

Now we want to know.
Is it just us?
Is everyone else feeling like they are 80?

This is getting out of control.
If you have a personal connection to Dr. Oz, please send him our way.  We need to the kind of medical guidance that only he can offer.

We would be ever so grateful.

You Might Be a Dr. Oz Junkie, if...

So, I think I may be a bit obsessed with Dr. Oz and his "suggestions" on his television show. I'm sure half of my Facebook friends believe this is the case, while the others are just as interested or obsessed as I am. This  picture is of my recent purchase.

I do DVR every episode; however, I do not watch every single one. I only watch the ones that are of interest to me. And, I not only watch them, I take notes on my phone. I want to know what to buy when I go to Akin's the next time. Here are a few of the notes I've made.

Speaking of Akin's, one of my childhood classmates is the manager there. She runs a great store where the staff are friendly and helpful. If you see LeAnne, be sure to tell her hello! They even keep the most requested items on a shelf labeled, Dr. Oz. Oh my, this is helpful because when I go into health food stores I'm like a lost puppy. It might as well all be in a foreign language. I think this is why I love Dr. Oz so much. I know if he has recommended it, it must be something he believes in. (You might call ahead to see if they have what you are looking for in stock. If they don't, they have a 3-ring-binder labeled "Dr. Oz:" they will put your name and number in and call you when it comes in.) I just so happen to have my name in that binder a few times. 7 Keto is one that I'm wanting and am having to wait on. That's okay. I need to save my money for my next trip. This stuff adds up! *laugh*

Did you know that some people are ultra-sensitive when it comes to Dr. Oz? I had a "friend" (a blogger whom I'd never met in real life) drop me because of a Dr. Oz status I made. She made some sort of snake reference to Dr. Oz and then dropped me. CRACK.ME.UP! She did me a favor. I keep threatening that I'm going to do some Facebook housecleaning. Every now and then I get lucky and people clean themselves right on out! Good riddance! And, just like some of my friends are anti-Ozzies, there are some that love him as much, or more, than I do. I want my long-time friend Traci and I to go see him together. Oh, WHAT FUN!

I do still have a couple of nagging questions in the back of my mind.

  • I would like to hear from people that have been on his show that take a particular supplement for whatever it was they were needing help with. Did it work? I think he should have a show with past guests to see how they are doing.
  • How much is too much? I mean, there is NO way you can take or do everything he suggests. I don't want to overdo the supplements.

What are you thoughts? Are you an Dr. Oz fan? Have you purchased any of his recommendations? Come on, share your thoughts!

RHOK'n New Bods?

Yes! Finally the RHOK Stars have secretly discovered a way to have our cake and drink it too. Mrs. Hart invited us over to her nest on Monday night for a "Shake" Party with one of our advertisers here at The RHOK, Mary Kay Penrice, a ViSalus Distributor. Mrs. Hart has been replacing one meal a day with the protein shakes since December 30, 2011 and absolutely insisted that we all try them so that we could at least see and tell our readers what ViSalus is if someone asked. We did and guess what? Some of us are getting cake for breakfast now.

Mary Kay has actually attended a few of our RHOK Outs so many of our readers may actually remember her. She is very passionate about ViSalus and has written the following guest post for us telling us a little more about the product and what it can do for us from a weight, shape and health standpoint.

Aren't we cute?

Mary Kay wants to let us know among the top New Year’s Resolutions are resolutions about weight loss, exercise, and to quit smoking.  Also popular are resolutions dealing with better money management/debt reduction.

The following shows how many of these resolutions are maintained as time goes on:
-past the first week: 75%
-past 2 weeks: 71%
-after one month: 64%
-after 6 months: 46%

While a lot of people who make New Year’s Resolutions do break them, research shows that making resolutions is useful.  People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions.

A few other facts, taken from the website of Dr. Oz, himself:  Meal replacement shakes are an effective, easy way to drop pounds.  They teach you how to eat less and lose weight quickly and permanently – and the right shake can boost your metabolism by 25%.  Who doesn’t need that?

The fact is, when you’re trying to lose body fat, you can’t skip breakfast – but you may be too busy to think about calories and to make healthy choices.  That’s why drinking a protein shake first thing in the morning is a simple, foolproof weight-loss method.  When you drink the right protein shake, you give your body the nutrients it needs and you can also:
  • Boost your metabolic rate by 25%
  • Save calories by avoiding fatty foods (if you drink a shake for breakfast, you can save an average of 400 calories per day).
  • Keep your blood sugar levels balanced, allowing your body to burn stored fat as fuel.
  • Increase your energy levels, which enables you to increase your activity and automatically burn more calories.
Why do meal replacements or protein shakes for breakfast work?  Simply put, weight loss occurs when your metabolism gets moving and you put out more calories than you take in.  If you were to replace your 750-calorie bagel and orange juice meal with a 155-calorie protein shake, you’d save 595 calories per day.  And you’d see the results on your bathroom scale in no time.

According to OK.gov website:
  •  Nearly 67% of Oklahoma adults are either overweight or obese
  •  The number is 34% for Oklahoma youth
  •  Overweight and obesity are associated with many health risks, such as heart disease, high blood      pressure, high blood cholesterol, Type 2 Diabetes, and depression
  •  The estimated cost associated with obesity in Oklahoma is more than $854 million each year.
  •  This problem affects the health of individuals, families and communities throughout the state.

The Editors of Prevention in an article titled “The 8 Most Artery-Clogging Cities in America”, Tulsa, OK is listed as number 7.  One thing that probably contributes to Tulsans’ high risk of heart disease is the city’s low “walkability”.  According to Walk Score, an organization which promotes pedestrian-friendly communities, only 6% of Tulsa residents live in a neighborhood with a walk score of 70 or above (100 being best) and 57% live in entirely car-dependent locales.

And if that is not enough facts, researchers at University of Texas Health Science center in their recent study, found 50% of post menopausal patients with breast cancer were obese, another 25% overweight, and the remaining 25% of normal weight, proving that obesity and breast cancer are linked.

Quick, get NAKED & go step on your bathroom scale…then look in the mirror.  Like what you see?  Is your New Year’s Resolution going to be to LOSE WEIGHT again this year?  How about adding 7-10 lbs to your current weight like the average American over the holidays… It doesn’t have to be that way!

Healthy Friendships

I received many messages from my last girlfriend post. I thought I should follow it up with information on healthy friendships. It seems many of us have been affected by women both negatively and in a positive way. One of my dear friends reminded me today I might not be the leading authority on making healthy friendships. Again, why I like to surround myself with friends who tell me the truth (in love)! So I am providing information from several articles and books.

Friendship is a gift all women need, during every stage of their lives.
Friends who share life's experiences -from the joys to the sorrows - help each other live the abundant life made for them.  Some friendships can often be challenging to navigate.  Friends can bless each other, but they can wound each other, too.
The good news is that you can enjoy strong friendships if you're intentional about being the kind of friend you want others to be for you.  Here's some tips on how you can be a good friend:

Avoid competition.  Your friendships should be places of safe refuge, which they can't be if they're tainted by competitive attitudes between you and your friends.  Competing with each other (about who has the best body or home, who wins the best man or job, etc.) leads to fear that will make it difficult for you all to freely share ideas, successes, or disappointments with each other.  Lurking behind the desire to compete with other women is often a need to feel valuable.  Pray for God to give you the confidence you need to derive your sense of worth from Him alone.  Remind yourself that you're valuable because God made you in His image and deeply loves you.

Avoid gossip.  Resist the temptation to gossip about any other women to your friends, or to gossip about your friends to others.  Ask God to give you the strength to keep personal information private and the courage to speak out against gossip when others are engaging in it.  Do all you can to protect other women's  reputations and build bonds of trust with your friends.

Confront wisely.  When one of your friends is in trouble, try to respond wisely, without resorting to the unhealthy extremes of either doing too much (such as giving unsolicited advice or too much criticism) or too little (refraining from getting involved at all).  Pray about the destructive decisions you observe your friend making, and seek guidance to speak with your friend in just the right way.  Keep in mind that when Jesus spoke with people who were making destructive choices, He simply asked them questions that would  bring truths buried deep in their souls to the forefront of their minds. Consider asking your friend specific questions designed to remind her of what she already knows is true and to motivate her to act on that truth.

Forgive.  You must forgive friends who have hurt or offended you for your relationships with them and to be healthy. Forgiving does not mean that you stay in an unhealthy friendship. It means that you release them to God and allow healing to begin.

Maintain friendships through different stages of life.  Some friends will be with you for a lifetime after you meet; others will be in your life just for a certain period of time.  But remember that you need friends during every stage of life.  When changing circumstances (such as getting married, having a baby, or moving) threaten some of your friendships, pray for the wisdom to know whether you should let some of relationships go or hold onto them.  Renew the friendships you choose to keep so they can adjust to the new circumstances in your life.  Add new friends to your old ones, as well.

Celebrate best friends.  If you have a friend whom you're closer to than all others, keep investing time and  energy into that relationship.  Thank God for her, and celebrate the fact that you have a best friend to enjoy.

Let your friendships serve as mirrors.  Notice how your friendships reflect back new insights about yourself.  As you pay attention to the way a particular friend makes you think and feel - either positive or negative - and consider why you react that way, you'll come to understand more about yourself.   The more time you spend with your friends, the more they can become like mirrors for you, reflecting what's good and bad about your own attitudes and actions and bringing to light what you may never have seen before.

Allow unexpected friendships to change you.  Sometimes you find yourself drawn to people whom you wouldn't have considered as friends before.  When a friendship surprises you by developing unexpectedly, Prayerfully use the relationship to help you learn valuable insights and grow into a better person in the process. Beth Moore, author of Breaking Free,  warns that friendships which have an "instant" intimacy are a red flag. It takes time to develop trust and common bonds. Unexpected development does not mean overnight best friends.

Help create a healthy community of friends.  Group friendships can become marred by such issues as jealousy and oversensitivity.  Do your best to make your circles of friends accepting and authentic.  Listen to each other, encourage each other, and make yourselves available to serve each other.  Give each other grace and support.Diversity is healthy, remember not all friends look, talk or think alike. Here is one of new, favorite quotes...

Deal with space.  Whenever one of your close friendships pulls farther apart, use the space between you and your friend to gain a new perspective on the relationship. This is not time to panic and post hearts on her Facebook page. {like a crazy ex-girlfriend} Pray, journal and take time to see what is going on with the friendship. If you have a friend that goes from close to distant frequently this could a warning sign for her stability.

Explore your expectations.  Figure out what qualities you hope your various friendships will have, and clearly communicate those expectations to your friends.  Do you want them to show up for important events in your life, know the right words to make you feel better when you're going through a tough time, or something else?  Let them know. Direct communication is always best.

Befriend yourself.  You have to learn how to be a good friend to yourself before you can truly become a good friend to others.  Don't ask your friends to do something for you that only you can do for yourself, such as discovering your identity and worth or preventing you from feeling lonely.  Give yourself the gift of solitude on a regular basis to pray and think about your life.  Then you'll have more to give to others.

Housewife Healthy Eating Tips

Yes, I said it, I'm in Housewife Hell! I weighed in for a weight loss challenge last Thursday & now I just want to eat everything in sight. This is driving me to want "Mommy Juice" at 9:30am!
To help me stay focused I thought I would share the Top 10 Tips I have received on this weight loss journey. If you have a great tip please share. I need all the help I can get at this point....

TIP #1. DRINK LOTS OF WATER
We often confuse thirst with hunger, leading to load our body with unnecessary calories, when what we really need is a glass of cold water. If you prefer, you can add some lemon slices to the jug of water for extra flavor, or to drink tea with fruit flavor, but no sugar. It is a simple and healthy trick that will help you a lot in your weight loss efforts.

TIP #2. THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN ADD TO YOUR DIET, NOT WHAT TO REMOVE

Set a goal to try and consume the recommended 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. This will ensure that your body takes the necessary fiber, while fighting hunger. You must also not forget the many benefits of veggies for your health and disease prevention.
A good way to eat more vegetables is to mix them with the food. For example you can have vegetables in your rice or soups, in chicken as salads or in pasta. This is better than eating them on the side.
Eating more vegetables is a healthy habit that once you get used to it you will never want to quit. Besides they are ZERO WW points people.

TIP #3. EAT ONLY WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY

Many times, our desire for food is not due to real hunger, but due to other several psychological factors. Hunger is the message of our organism to tell us that we need fuel, so if the desire for food is not due to hunger, the food will not make us feel better. On the contrary we will feel worse because of the extra unnecessary calories we will consume. It is also a not healthy habit because it does not offer anything and will help you destroy your weight loss efforts.
Try to reduce the portions of your meals and increase their frequency. Notice after each meal if you feel bloated or tired so you understand when you feel real hunger & when you eat because you are "emo".

TIP #4. AVOID AFTER DINNER SNACKS

The most dangerous time to destroy your weight loss efforts and diet is after the last meal of the day, when you lie down in front of the TV with a bag of chips, gallon of ice cream or bag of Halloween candy. This is the time that you eat out of a habit, without really being hungry.
If you cannot resist the temptation of a small “sin” after a long day, obtain healthy snacks such as low-calorie cereal bars or ice cream without sugar and fat, and allow yourself to have one per day. When you get used to this try to further reduce the calorie load, with a cup of sleepy time tea with no calories. {just typing that one sounds BORING}

TIP #5. ENJOY YOUR FAVORITE FOODS

To completely avoid your favorite food will not create the desired results since the feeling of deprivation leads at sometime to exaggeration. Think the last time you did not eat chocolate for a month and the quantity consumed when you decided that you are ‘allowed’ to eat chocolate.
Instead of excluding from your weight loss program and diet foods you really enjoy, be sure to buy them in smaller amounts and to eat them less often, once or twice a week. Moreover, the expectation is what makes the satisfaction greatest. Ya, ok, still working on this one. I do love the mini reese's out this time of year.

TIP #6. DO NOT BE TOO STRICT ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM

When you need to exit your diet for a while, add walking into your routine & avoid the drive-thru's. For even better results, do not buy sweets or other snacks for home- instead replace them with plenty of fruits and limit your night outs to one per week. Hopefully, you will not have to worry that you will give up to the temptation while you are at home.

TIP #7. EAT SEVERAL SMALL MEALS DURING THE DAY

The weight loss is achieved by the consumption of fewer calories than those we burn. When, however, we are constantly hungry, this is not easy at all. Research shows that people who eat 4-5 meals a day find it easier to control their appetite and weight.
Apply this method for your own weight loss program. Try to divide the calories you consume during the day in many small portions. Make sure that you consume as much as possible calories before noon, with the evening meal being the last time you eat in a day. This is not only good for your weight loss efforts but it is also a healthy habit because it gives enough time to your body to function the ‘burn’ process properly. {or so they tell me}

TIP #8. SPICY FOOD!

Add seasonings or hot spices in your food, which will enhance the taste and make you feel that you eat more.
The meals enhanced by tasty spices will stimulate your taste and create a sense of satisfaction, without actually eating more.
When you want something sweet, choose a hot flavor with cinnamon or ginger. It gives you the sweet flavor you need, with fewer calories.

TIP #9. FILL THE KITCHEN WITH HEALTHY AND EASY MEALS

The easy-made meals or snacks that are prepared quickly solve a lot of your problems (cooking time, preparation time etc) and lead you a step closer to weight loss success. These will prevent you from ordering something from a fast food restaurant or to order pizza, because you can within 5-10 minutes prepare your own healthy meal. This one tip has saved me many, many times!
Such healthy foods include:
Frozen & fresh veggies/fruit
Bagged salads
Canned vegetables (tomatoes, beans)
Sliced deli meat such as turkey
Low-fat cheese
Brown rice (5min.)
TIP #10. ORDER KIDS MEAL!
When eating out, you can order an individual pizza or a small sandwich. In this way you keep the calories low and the quantity consumed controlled.
Another trick is to use smaller plates. This helps the portions look larger, and if by looking at them you mind is satisfied, then most likely your stomach will also be satisfied.

Happy Eating?! I mean seriously, who can't be happy with a kid's meal? You get the latest Hello Kitty toy with your meal.

Housewives Workout Too

I don't know about you guys, but with summer officially making itself known in Oklahoma, I'm stressing OUT. Seriously.

It's hott as hel...an oven, which requires short sleeves and short pants (also known as shorts).

However, I feel totally unprepared. My skin is pasty white. I wish everyone thought it was cool to be a whitie. I mean, it's cool for the Cullens. Why can't it be cool for everyone else? Don't they kinda set the standard?

I guess not EVERYONE lives in my world.

But it's not just my pasty white skin. It's also the flabbiness. My arms give the double wave. You know what I'm talking about. You wave and your upper arm waves back. Yeah, so NOT attractive.

Well, no worries. I've found the perfect exercise video for this problem area.

If you don't have a baby laying around, I'm sure you can grab some canned goods or a bag of flour or something.

Y'all let me know if you get any good results with this.  What is your favorite exercise?  Have you found a tried-and-true way of getting rid of the "double wave"?  Do share!

Wanna Look Like A Swimsuit Model?

So, do you wanna look like a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model??

Well, according to an article I recently read on Shine, all you've gotta do is follow these 5 steps...
(my comments are in BLUE)

1. Combine Cardio and Weight Training
Supposedly, you're supposed to do a little of both...every day.

I know, I know.  Sounds crazy.

2. Don’t Forget About Food
It said something about limiting junk food and increasing good, healthy nutritional food. Oh, and it said you should be burning more calories than you're consuming.

Sounds ludacris, if you ask me.

3. Ab-Trimming Foods
The article stated that you should consume foods that digest easily and helps "clear out the system", such as high fiber foods, vegetables, and probiotics.
So, it looks like large fries and venti mochas are out.

4. Hydrate Your Skin from the Outside!
Your skin eats too. What you slather on it matters.

Who knew?!

5. Hydrate Your Skin from the Inside!
H2O...in large quantities.

Plus, you can look at all the bathroom trips as added exercise!  It's a win-win!

Yep, just follow those steps and you'll look like this...
She even made a little exercise video for us...

So, we should all be looking like swimsuit models in no time!

I'll expect a swimsuit picture of each and everyone of you posted to your blog no later than June 1st.

I kid.
What have you been doing to get swimsuit ready (or summer clothes ready, if swimsuits don't apply)?
