My Top 10 for Summer 2013

With first day of school pictures starting up on Facebook and our own first day back looming in the near future, I thought it might be nice to reflect on my summer.  Amazingly, I pulled pictures from my files and it turns out I have exactly ten favorite summer memories.  Isn't that nice, David Letterman?

I'm hoping this will inspire some of you to compile your own list and include it in the comments.  If you have a blog, send me the link when you comment!  I would love to know what you have been up to this summer!  If you don't have a blog, just type it out in the comments.  Even if you didn't take a big trip, it is always nice to think about what made this part of your year special.

With a kiddo starting high school this year, I guess I'm enjoying looking backwards more than forwards.  I honestly don't know where the time has gone.  I look at that man-child's face and think that my little boy can't possibly be ready for high school!  Eek!  For the record, I had Michael when I was nine years old so I'm still so very young.

We started off the summer with a fun trip to Grand Lake O' The Cherokees with my lifelong friend, Melinda, and her family.  There is something extra special about a friend you have known for 34 years (which is hard to believe since I just told you I am 23 in the paragraph before this one).  I love her and I love her family.  We had the BEST time spending the day with them.  What you can't see in the picture is that I kept my eyes closed most of the time I spent on this tube because I was sure it would flip.

Priss, Priss' son Jacob, Melinda at the lake

The one day I took the boys to the new pool at the country club, the firemen showed up and sprayed the kids down.  It goes without saying that my favorite part was watching the firemen and the boys favorite part was being soaked by the water hose.

No fires here!
Another highlight was flying down to Houston to be a part of one of my best friends' surprise party celebration.  Leslie was in shock!  The Doc and I were in Houston for exactly 16 hours.  It was a whirlwind and we were tired, but it was worth it!

High School friends plus Leslie's Glamazon sister-in-law in the middle.
Taking the boys to the beach is always, always a highlight.  Beach vacations are so relaxing!  This trip we saw two sharks swimming nearby and a crab got my whole foot in his claw.  I was just fine after a few drinks.

My boys - playing with hermit crabs on the beach.
These pictures are all out of order, but you don't mind - right?
This summer I surprised the Doc for his birthday (which was April) and coordinated a golf trip with friends to Branson.  It was so much fun!  At night, we played The Game of Things in our condo.  If you are looking for a fun game for a group of adults, this one is hysterical.  I am hoping for an encore next year.

Doc & Priss on the left with friends in Branson

Believe it or not, a trip to the dentist made the list.  The boys love going to the Doc's office!  Here is Jacob getting his teeth cleaned and Michael... um... being Michael... on the other side of the window.  We made a Harlem Shake video while we waited.

Doc's office
I was tired of my boring and messy office so we painted it green.  It felt good to clean this room out!

Only I would consider reorganizing a a summer highlight, yes?
Our annual trek to Colorado must always make the list.  This year, the Doc's sister and her family joined us.  The kids loved it!

Michael and his cousin at the top of the rocks

The day after school let out, my friend Mary and I took the boys to Branson.  We did all of the cheesy touristy stuff.  The boys loved the wax museum.

Beam us up, Scotty!
Vegas.  You've already heard about this girls-only trip twice.  It is worth a third mention.  We are still having withdrawals.  We would tell you more, but what happens in Vegas...

Albright, Leslie & Priss with two new friends at New York, New York piano bar

And that sums up my most fun summer moments.
Now it is YOUR turn.

What did you do this summer?

Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone

What if your parents dropped you off at camp and didn't show up when it was time to go home?
Yeah, that happened.

Last year, Michael went to overnight camp for the first time.  I was paranoid that I would get the date wrong to pick him up.  I checked once, then twice, then a third time for good measure.  I was super paranoid.  It was so bad that I made myself quit checking after that original email from the camp.  I was trying not to feed that OCD side of me.

Doc and I were at the gym when I got the call.

Counselor: "Um... are you almost here to get Michael?"
Me: "What are you talking about?"
Counselor: "We just finished closing ceremonies.  He is ready to go home."
Me: "I'm in Tulsa."
Counselor: "           "
(That's silence.)

This camp is almost three hours from our home.
The Doc and I took our sweaty selves to the car and drove at the speed of light.
I cried the whole way.

Worst parenting moment to date.
I sincerely hope I cannot top that.

I have spent the last year trying to forgive myself for that blunder. Michael acted like it was no big deal.  He sweetly told me, "It's okay!"  What a guy.

We drove Michael to camp on Sunday.  Camp Barnabas is amazing.  They provide a summer camp experience for children with special needs and/or chronic illness.  Michael only had three concerns.

  1. Air Conditioning - Last year's campsite didn't have it and it was hot, hot, hot.
  2. Scabies - He doesn't intend to bring home any new friends burrowed in his skin.
  3. Going Home - He keeps telling me not to forget him.  I keep emphasizing that I didn't actually forget him.

The irony is that when we showed up to drop Michael off at camp, we were given a paper with the wrong date on it for closing ceremonies.  I'm not joking.  It said June 21st.  We dropped him off on July 15th.
I no longer doubt my sanity and calendar keeping ability.

We're looking forward to seeing those closing ceremonies this year.
Whenever they are.

Countdown to Summer

We have summer on the brain around our house. How about you?
School is out in 9 days & the countdown is on!

Vacays, weekend getaways, camps, lay around by the pool, flip flops ... a few of my favorite summer things.
I can't wait for the alarm clocks to be turned off. That is my favorite thing about summer. I'm not a morning girl. What are your summer plans?

If you need me, here's where you'll find me.

Beauty Product Ideas for Summer 2012

My girlfriends have been discussing all things SUMMER. It looks like it's going to be a hot one! Are you ready? Well don't fret. Let's discuss some products for our pool/beach/weekend bags:

1. Spray Tan
Do you spray tan? I personally do not, however I am finding many do. Don't let what happened to my sister recently happen to you...

After laughing hysterically, we googled ways to remove. It's not an easy task. What are your favorite spray products? I've heard Fake Bake is excellent.

2.  Sunscreen
I use a high SPF every summer & still get a nice color. I love Ocean Potion. It works well. No allergies & smells wonderful.
What are your favorite sunscreens? I really enjoy the brands that go on well & smell nice.

3. Kissable Lips
For me, it's important to protect the lips. Mine burn when out in the sun. I like to find lip gloss with SPF of 30. Not always easy. I did find this stuff. Kiss My Face Organic Sport Lip Balm with SPF 30. It's only $2!

So what are your fave summer lip shades? Please share. Every girl needs a good gloss in her bag.

Share your "pool bag" must haves with us. Really want to hear about your summer beauty products!

Okie Housewife Triple Digit Survival Tips

So, yesterday was officially the hottest day of the year (or decade...or whatever).  Some of our local meteorologists said they had never forcasted actual temps that high...116 to be exact.  I think I just worked up some sweat typing that out.  And it is NOT "perspiring"...it's SWEATING.  Trust me.  There is nothing girly about our trip digit temps.

Good hair days?  Forget about them!

Make-up?  No use.  It'll just melt right off your face.

Cute clothes?  Don't waste your time.  They'll be wrinkled and sweaty in all the right (or wrong) places by the time you get where you're going.

Side note:  I googled "hotter than h*ll" images and this is what it gave me...I kid you not!

I can not lie!  I mean I can, but I'm not, 'cause we all know where you go for that. *achem*

Now where was I?  Oh, yes.  In an effort to survive these hotter-that-hades temperatures, I've come up with a few tips and tricks.

Here's my Okie Housewife Triple Digit Temp Survival Tips:
  1. Whatever you do, DO NOT cook.  Tell your hubby that you're conserving energy and you're trying not to run up the electric bill.  He'll appreciate your efforts.
  2. Use the money you're saving from not cooking to buy take-out.
  3. Sleep nude.  Warning:  This could result in a baby boom around May next year.
  4. Store your bras in the freezer.
  5. While you're at it, store your undies in the freezer.
  6. Let the kids "swim" in the bathtub...this kills two birds with one stone.
  7. If you need to, tell the kids that Nick Jr. and Disney are on strike...this should buy you at least a few hours of kid-free television time.  And discussing the term "strike" will be educational.  <---look at you being an overachiever!
  8. Take a field trip to your local shaved ice establishment.  When you return home, turn that baby into an adult "beverage".
  9. Let the kids have ice cream for breakfast.  It's a dairy product.  Totally nutritional.
  10. Last but not least, think about that ice storm/blizzard we had earlier this year.  You know the one where we were snowed in for days, had three feet of ice on our houses and cars, and all the stores ran out of milk and bread.  Yeah, well December will be here before you know it.
Stay kool.

Where Did The Summer Go?

Seriously, y'all?! It's almost the end of July??  How the heck did that happen?

My little boy started back to Football Monday night, which is our cue that school is just around the corner!

I don't know about you, but I'm not ready.  I'm not ready for schedules, early bedtimes, or homework.  I need a few more weeks of summer!  All of the school supplies in the isle at Wal-Mart are freaking me out!

Does it seem like summer break gets shorter and shorter?

Or are you counting down the days until your kiddos are back in school?

Any last minute summer plans?

The Heartland Flyer - Summer Travel Ideas

So, summer is here.  School is out.  The kids are ALREADY bored.  You're locking yourself in closets and bathrooms...

Don't look at me like that.  You know it's true.

Last year, about this time.  My big ol' crazy family hopped on the Heartland Flyer and headed south.  We were just looking for a short trip to break up the summer and help cure a little boredom.  We got what we were looking for!

I had no idea how much fun (and surprisingly relaxing) it would be!

On Saturday morning, we drove to Norman and caught the train there.  This was our first experience on a long distance train ride and let me tell you, it is the WAY to go!  We had 9 people in our group and you couldn't ask for better traveling conditions.

People can go to the bathroom when they want (NO bathroom breaks) and as frequently as they want.  There is a snack car (NO food breaks) that sells sandwiches, snacks, drinks, and sundries...and tiny bottles of *achem* pop. *wink, wink*

The seats are roomy and comfortable...they even have 120v plug-ins!  We were only on the train for about 3 1/2 hours and it went by so fast.  Everyone, even my paranoid cousin (who had to take a Valium), said they had a great time.

"Picnik Show"                                                Create a free slideshow with Picnik!

This was just the beginning to a fabulous fun weekend.   The Dallas/Fort Worth area has so much to offer in the way of entertainment. We took in a Rangers/Cubs baseball game and shopped in Sundance Square. We also enjoyed some YUMMYLICIOUS food. One of our fav stops was at Riscky's BBQ in Sundance Square! Mmmmm. So good.

Have you been on a train ride?  Where to? Did you enjoy it?

...who's thinking it's about time for a little weekend trip...and some tiny bottles...of pop, of course.

OUR SUMMER BUCKET LIST

(alternately titled "How NOT to Kill Your Kids in 80 Days" or "80 Days CAN Go Quicker Than Watching Paint Dry On the Wall")

Hi.  I'm Valerie.

I'm a real housewife.  Oh yeah, I am.  I got me some real big piles of laundry to prove it, real kids, real pets, a real husband, several real jobs, and I really do live smack dab in Oklahoma where right now it is REAL hot.  That's right -- I'm a real born and raised Oklahoma housewife that can dodge tornadoes while whipping up some fried chicken with the best of 'em. (Not really.  I haven't yet mastered the fine art of fried chicken unless you count breezing through the drive-thru line at KFC.)  But I do love my state somethin' fierce, yes I do, and I am proud to be a Real Housewife of Oklahoma.

A couple months ago I went from one to three kids, pretty much overnight.  The Great State of Oklahoma matched my little family o' three up with two brothers who were in need of a family, and here we are, a great big family of five.  The transition itself has been way smoother than I ever anticipated, but I cannot lie as there has been one big thing I've been dreading, something looming ominously over my head these past two months.  You might have already guessed it:

Summertime with three kids.  80 DAYS worth of summertime with three kids, to be exact.

What in the heck was I gonna do with three kids all summer?

My three boys have been in school.  That's right -- I've had a good seven hours or so to myself Monday through Friday to get things done.  The idea of transitioning from that to 24/7 of good ol' fashioned "togetherness" was a bit daunting.  To top it all off, my "original" kid just so happened to be aging out of our church's Mother's Day Out summer program, so the "go-to" answer for giving myself a break a few days a week was not even an option anymore.  And my two newest guys are also too old for the Mother's Day Out summer program.  It was enough to almost send this mama over the edge.

Enter the "summer bucket list".

Never heard of it, you say?  Let me enlighten you.

Last year I stole this idea from a very clever blogger.  If you haven't already heard of Meg, I'm guessin' you'll soon be clicking on over to check her out, and I'm pretty sure you'll be adding her blog to your Google Reader.  Girlfriend has got all sorts of great ideas goin' on, but in my opinion, this one is one of her best.

Basically, it's the same idea as any other bucket list (just like the movie with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson).  You make up a list of all sorts of fun ideas that you and your kiddies can check off over the summer.  Wake up one morning and have no plans?  Voila!  The Bucket List can give you an idea.  Got kids whining and complaining about being bored?  Boy howdy!  The Bucket List can fix them up in a jiff. (Well, unless you live in my house, that is.  Whining and complaining only lands you quality time on your bed.  Ha.)

I'm not going to lie.  A LOT of the things on our bucket list are things that we already had planned to do this summer.  And some of them might be things that don't sound all that fun until you slap them up there on the posterboard in rainbow colors with a box to check off -- and it's like magic.  All of a sudden, it's fun and challenging.  Who cares if you already go to Sonic Happy Hour every day -- stick it up on the list anyway!  Heck, I wouldn't even be past sneaking a few chores in on there to make them look a little more appealing.  (I do that all the time.  In fact, the other day I told the boys if they were REALLY GOOD they might get to help us clean up the yard.  Be jealous because it worked.)  I also tried on our bucket list to put up a good variety of things -- some easy, some more challenging, some cheap or free, some that cost more, some that take little or no time, and some that require planning in advance.  But I am bound and determined that we might actually be able to check every single one of them off before the summer's end.  Last year one of the only ones we didn't end up checking off was the "drive-in movie" box.  I thought I'd be all clever and wait until summer's end (and the hopefully cooler temperatures) to do that one, and then our local drive-in burned to a crisp.  No joke.

My friends have gotten a kick out of some of the ideas on our list, especially the one titled "Ears 'n Beers".  Ah yes, we give our kids beer.  (For reals, people, you think we would really do that??)  It's a little annual party we do with our neighbors every summer, grilling up "ears" of corn, making several gourmet butters and such to dress them with, lots of side dishes and desserts, and then "beers" for the adults and root beers for the kiddos.  (It's a big hit with all the Southern Baptists.)  And some of the things on my list I put very generic descriptions of for good reason.  For example: "science museum" and "water park".  There's a couple of science museums in our state we could choose from, so honestly, whichever ends up being the most convenient is going to be the winner.  I cannot lie -- I am not a big fan of our local water park, so if it ends up with find a suitable alternative elsewhere, we can still check that baby off the list.  Yep, that's how I roll.

I mentioned before that I love our state somethin' fierce, so it is important to me that my kids grow up to love and appreciate it as well.  Both last year's list and this year's list included visits to fun places that are found only in our great state:  The Blue Hole just east of Salina, the Kiddie Park in Bartlesville, Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show in Pawnee (you'd better hurry on that one though as it is only in the month of June), Pop's in Arcadia, and the Lego Store in Oklahoma City.  (Okay, okay, that last one is not really a state attraction, but my three boys would certainly argue otherwise!)  Last year we also visited the Blue Whale in Catoosa, Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park in Foyil, and the Tallgrass Prairie just north of Pawhuska.  There are so many more attractions in Oklahoma that I could've listed, but I figure we've got  plenty of summers in our future to add those to the list.  Oklahoma may not be an exciting vacation destination as New York or California, but where else are you gonna find a big metal whale floating in a murky pond or some concrete totem poles?  Not in New York City!  I can't encourage you enough to get out there on the road and explore all that our state has to offer, the impressive as well as the oddball.  Your kids will love it.

Just so you know, this idea can be adapted to all types of families.  No kids at your house?  After congratulating yourself on having oodles of free time and a whine-free casa this summer, make up your own bucket list of things you'd like to accomplish this summer.  No husband?  Dang, girlfriend, fill it UP with all sorts of girly fun!  You can't imagine the thrills that come with checking off accomplishments with rainbow-hued washable markers. Although, don't ask my boys about the markers -- they might complain that their mama hoards the markers so she can get the satisfaction of checking the boxes herself.  Hmmmm, not little ol' me, I would NEVER do that.  Never.  Hmmmm...

Happy Summer from this real housewife to you.

Valerie

Mememememememe!

Does that title sound narcissistic? Well, it's not really. Sort of. It just means we are MeMe-ing it today because, well, whenever I am asked to post I can do whatever I want.

Mrs. Sinclair is like super busy this week, getting ready to take her super cute girl to the State pageant. She's freaking out and covered in glitter and sparkles, making list after list after list. She's also hoping she can walk by then, because if you have been following, that poor woman has more ailments than a 99 year old hypochondriac, bless her heart. She also can only work in 30min increments because shes had bronchitis and asthma induced issues for 16 days straight and could seriously pass out at any moment. Therefore, I have taken pity on the poor lady.

And so, we are doing a summertime MeMe. It'll be fun. And you can even link up OR MeMe it in the comments.
